From exhilarating hiking trails to adrenaline-pumping adventures, Moab has something for everyone. Whether you are an avid hiker, adventure seeker, or nature lover, this lively town will leave you spellbound.
Hiking in Moab
One of the prime attractions in Moab is the vast array of hiking trails that cater to all skill levels.
An iconic Moab hike that comes to mind is the famous Delicate Arch, a natural wonder that has become an emblem of Utah. The moderate 3-mile round trip hike rewards you with a breathtaking view of the arch, particularly enchanting during sunrise or sunset. If you are seeking the classic hikes of Arches, be sure to sign up for your timed entry ticket, to ensure a seamless day in the park!
In addition to Arches, there are plenty of noteworthy hikes all around town. The Grandstaff Trail is a 5.7-mile picturesque desert trail that travels up a canyon and takes you to an inspiring natural bridge.
Canyonlands National Park
Wanting something more remote than Arches? Explore the mesmerizing trails of Canyonlands, where you can witness the wonders carved by the Colorado River. From the scenic Island in the Sky to the rugged Needles District, the park offers a variety of trails for all levels. The park is divided into three distinct zones—Island in the Sky, Needles, and the Maze. We suggest visiting the highlights in ISKY or planning a full day and heading out to Needles.
Before embarking on any hiking or adventurous activities, make sure to check weather conditions and trail conditions for your safety. Carry sufficient water, sunscreen, and snacks during your outdoor adventures to stay hydrated and energized. If you're new to hiking or seeking more guidance, consider joining a guided tour or hiring a local guide who can provide insights and ensure your safety.
Off-Roading & Rock Climbing
Experience the adrenaline rush of off-roading on the legendary Slickrock Bike Trail, which winds through challenging terrain and offers stunning panoramic views. You can choose to explore on a mountain bike or opt for a guided ATV tour.
Test your skills and conquer the towering cliffs of Moab. With various routes available, both beginners and experienced climbers can enjoy an exhilarating rock climbing adventure in this stunning natural playground. A great place to start is over on Potash Road. While it can be crowded, the climbs off of this road require zero approach and can be completed in a late afternoon.
Rafting the Colorado River
For an unforgettable water adventure, embark on a rafting trip on the mighty Colorado River. Surrounded by remarkable red rock formations, floating along the river will provide you with breathtaking views and an exhilarating ride. Whether you choose a half-day or multi-day trip, rafting the Colorado River is an experience not to be missed.
A great section of river to try out is the Moab Daily. This area is a 13-mile section of the Colorado which runs roughly from Hittle Bottom to Take out Beach. The rapids are rated up to class III here, but is accessible for beginners, as there is large stretches of flat water in between rapids. A variety of guiding companies offer this excursion as well, if you prefer to use a guide service.
Explore the La Sal Mountains
While Moab is renowned for its desert landscapes, the nearby La Sal Mountains offer a contrasting lush and alpine experience. Jutting out over the seemingly endless desert, the La Sal mountains are home to Utah’s second tallest peak. Mt. Peale towers over the desert at roughly 12,800 feet. In the summer months, the La Sals offer a mild, forested respite from the desert heat.
Take a picturesque drive along the scenic La Sal Mountain Loop Road, offering stunning vistas of mountain peaks, forests, and meadows. Don't forget to stop by Castle Valley Overlook for a breathtaking view of the surrounding landscapes.
Moab offers an unforgettable blend of adventure, natural beauty, and stunning landscapes. From the world-class Moab hiking trails to heart-pumping adventures, this vibrant town is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts.
